Signs and Symptoms of Burnout
Posted on May 20th, 2009 No commentsBurnout is the state of mental exhaustion that can lead to confusion and then eventually bring your life to a halt if not recognized early enough! Many professionals working in high stress environments succumb to the ailments of burnout. It is provoked by stress and overworking and eventually develops into a mental exhaustion. When mental exhaustion hits a person has no bearing on how to continue life and ultimately ends up having to take a break or quitting their present position. The highest rates of burnout in a work related situation seem to be in jobs that require shift work or long unentinded hours. Others reasons for burnout may be because of lack of personal accomplished on the job, health reasons that may stop you from living life to it’s fullest, and depression that is related to mental health problems. Emotion exhaustion ranks the highest on causes of burnout. Are you suffering from constant stress and low energy? Does your life feel bleak and undefeatable? Do you feel like just being on your own, unable to participate with friends and family? Are you moody, negative and feeling depressed? Are you looking at life, as problems piling up, but have no energy to do anything about fixing it? If you feel like this all the time…You…Yes you, may be suffering burnout. All of us at one time feel these feelings, but the question is…Are you feeling these feeling all the time? Dragging yourself out of bed every morning and wanting to turn around and go back because you just can’t face your day. Is a really good red flag sign! So if your everyday is feeling like a bad day and your feeling like a walking zombie that just can’t see the good in anything. Recognize this and move towards healing and making a better life for yourself. Without recognizing these symptoms the results may be:
- Losing your job and feeling resentful
- Family separation leading to isolation
- Hopelessness and helplessness
- Illness mental or physical
Depending on what stage you are at, the healing length will vary. So let’s deal with this stage right now! Now that you understand that you have a problem, you can fix the problems by finding support at work or home and setting up your own plan to managing your stress. Make promises to yourself to change, so that positive changes can happen. Note in a journal every night your mood based on scale 1(low) and 10(high). Note in the back of your journal the changes you want to see happen. After each score in your journal, note the changes you did for that day. In another journal after about 2 weeks, write down the changes you made and write down the goals that you want to see in those changes. Eventually you will find that their will be a synchronicity between your high level score days and the changes you made. Change can be scary, but the scariest and deadened part of your life you are leaving behind. The burnout empty feelings are not always easy to recognize. People can live for years in this state and end up not accomplishing what they could have. So it is important to be aware! Stress is different it lives an active life and things get done. But…Stress can lead to burnout. The over demands can lead to not wanting to carry on daily life and shutting down from your responsibilities. Burn out is a gradual process and may be difficult to recognize until you have hit bottom. So take a look at your life and assess. Life is about support and feeling like you are accomplishing something. We may reach a point in our life when nothing seems possible, and there is no direction. With job loses and the high demands of life, it can be daunting to find goodness. Having some sort of direction when you feel as though you are sinking and life is not worth living can help. Most times it is the present job that you have. There are career professionals that can help at local colleges and employment agencies. Your best future is moving forward gracelfully. Take a rest and figure out your best direction. So that your path to finding yourself is a little bit easier, try relaxation and meditation. The results can be extraordinary. Clearing your head and putting yourself in a place of peacefulness can change your life. Stress just simply slides away. When you have a life that is so full of stress, relaxation is the ideal way of finding your place. It’s hard to come home to a life if work has got you down. Then trying to get along with your spouse and your mood. What about your children and then dealing with them? They got homework that needs help and love that they need to receive from you.
